Social activist Aisha Yesufu has urged opposition politicians to adopt more practical campaign strategies ahead of the 2027 general elections, noting that many Nigerians are currently more concerned about survival than political rhetoric.
Yesufu made the remarks in a post on X on Thursday while reacting to a viral video in which a woman, after receiving rice linked to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reportedly cursed critics of the gesture.
According to the activist, the country’s worsening economic conditions mean that political messages alone may not resonate with citizens who are struggling to meet basic needs.
She argued that poverty has become widespread across Nigeria, forcing many people to prioritise food and daily survival over political debates and policy discussions.
Yesufu further alleged that the hardship facing many citizens was not accidental, claiming that people have been deliberately impoverished while food prices continue to rise, making small relief items appear highly valuable.
“In such conditions, even minor assistance can have a significant impact on how people respond politically,” she said.
The activist therefore advised opposition parties to craft campaign messages that connect directly with the daily realities of ordinary Nigerians.
She stressed that hunger often makes it difficult for people to engage with complex political ideas or policy debates.
“Citizens were deliberately impoverished, monies taken away from their pockets and food made expensive so that little tokens will matter to them,” Yesufu wrote.
“As we go into the 2027 election, the opposition must campaign to the people in the language the people will understand.
“For those who need bread, give them bread with your picture on it. For those who need policies, give them policy documents with your picture on it.
“A hungry man or woman cannot reason. He or she just wants the rumbling in their tummy to stop.”
